Whenever I’m searching for a movie to watch I’m always pulled in the direction of movies that start with the words "based on a true story" flashing across the screen. I’m fascinated by how directors, writers, and actors tell stories that are not merely pure imagination. And how sometimes multiple movies explore the same factual events but those events are interpreted completely differently, producing equally as different movies.
Here are four upcoming “based on a true story” movies I can’t wait to watch.
King Richard
Venus and Serina Williams are undoubtedly the greatest female tennis players of all time. But, how did they get there? King Richard explores that very question. The film follows the sister’s father, Richard Williams, played by Will Smith, as he coaches the two superstars who will change the sport of tennis forever.
Worth
This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the devastating September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks that changed the world forever. Based on these actual events, Worth follows the journey of a lawyer, Ken Feinberg, played by Michael Keaton, as he is put in charge of the payout for the September 11th, Compensation Fund. Along the way he struggles with a question, how much is a life worth?
Spencer
The most famous affair, divorce, and death in the world all have one common character, Princess Diana. Pablo Larraín’s Spencer examines the eroding relationship of Princess Diana, played by Kristen Stewart, and Prince Charles, played by Jack Farthing. The film is set over one Christmas weekend in 1991 when Princess Diana decides to leave the future King of England.
House of Gucci
Love, betrayal, family, and murder. These are the central themes of Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci. Lady Gaga stars as Patrizia Reggiani, the ex-wife of businessman and former head of the Gucci fashion house, Maurizio Gucci, played by Adam Driver. This biographical crime films follows their marriage, and it doesn’t just end in divorce, it ends in murder.
