There is nothing that makes me wish I was an elite athlete more than the olympics. The pageantry and grandeur of the opening ceremonies, the camaraderie of the teams, and of course the unbelievable talent of all the athletes. An entire village of people at the top of their craft is simply amazing. I’m fascinated by how these athletes got to where they are, what obstacles they overcame, and how they continue to be the best of the best. These five podcast episodes go into just that, so listen up, enjoy, and be inspired.
Aly Raisman is a two time Olympic gymnast, and team captain of the world renowned Fierce Five and Final Five. Aly talks about the all consuming nature of gymnastics, the pressure of perfection, and why it is so important to define yourself outside what you do. She also beautifully and vulnerably opens up about being a survivor of abuse and what it is like to publicly share that type of story.
Did anyone else get an IOU for an olympic tattoo for their eighteenth birthday or was that just Tom Daley? Tom Daley made his olympic debut at just fifteen years old, too young to get the traditional olympic rings tattoo, so for his eighteenth birthday his mom gave him a card with a very special IOU. Tom talks about how he got into the sport of diving, how he visualizes each dive before he starts, and how he is still scared of diving off the top board. He also opens up about dealing with bullying and loss at a young age.
Very few people get to call themselves an olympian and even fewer people get to say they represented the birthplace of the olympics. Alexi Pappas is one of those few people that can say both. In this interesting conversation, Alexi opens up about her crazy journey to making the Greek Olympic Track and Field Team, competing in the 2016 Rio Olympics, and what happens to athletes once the closing ceremonies are over. She also talks about her artistic goals in the world of filmmaking, acting, and writing. If you want to learn more about her story, check out her new book, Bravey!
Imagine being a professional athlete. Now imagine your entire family is made up of professional athletes. That’s how it is for sisters Jessica and Nelly Korda. The sisters are two of the top LPGA players on tour, their brother Sebastian just made his Wimbledon debut, their parents, Petr Kordan and Regina Rajchrtová, are former professional tennis players. Talk about athletic genes! Jessica and Nelly discuss the delicate balance between being competitors and cheerleaders for each other, how golf is a surprisingly collaborative game amongst the pros, and how important recovery is to your workout routine.
The GOAT, a literal phenom in the world of swimming, and let’s be honest, a literal phenom period. Michael Phelps dives into - yes, pun intended - his journey to become the most decorated Olympian of all time, how important finding the right coach is, and his challenges with his mental health. Michael has turned his first hand experience with depression, substance abuse, and suicidal thoughts into a passion for mental health advocacy and normalizing that it is okay to not be okay.
