Anyone who knows me, knows I spend an inordinate amount of time listening to podcasts. While I’m walking around town, driving to and from, working 9-5, if my headphones are in, I’m most likely listening to a podcast. Daily news shows, interview shows, history shows, you name it, I’m listening to it, and I’m always learning something. That’s the great thing about podcasts, they are a vehicle for education. Listeners are always connecting, always learning something from the podcasts they listen to, from the hosts they let into their headphones, and from the guests that jump on the microphone.
I listen to a lot, I repeat a lot, of different podcasts, but to start, here are five podcasts that are part of my heavy rotation.
Simply put, I love this podcast. Hosted by actor Dax Shepard and his soulmate Monica Padman (you’ll get it once you start listening). The duo talk with actors, athletes, business icons, professors, and more. All conversations center around the idea that being human means being messy. Armchair Expert episodes allow you to hear about the embarrassing moments of your favorite actors, the challenges that top athletes faced, and the struggles of becoming a leader in a field.
A brilliant podcast that features conversations of all types hosted by actress Sophia Bush. Utilizing her journalism background, she engages her guests in inspirational and truthful conversations. Sophia talks to all types of people who inspire her and ask them “how they’ve gotten to where they are, and where they think they’re still going”. These engaging conversations remind us that we are all works in progress.
Marc Maron might have helped define podcasting more than any other person. Starting the podcast, WTF with Marc Maron, in his garage, and out of a slight sense of desperation one might say, Marc quickly became a leader in the podcast industry. With over one thousand episodes, Marc has interviewed some of the most iconic people out there, including President Barack Obama.
This long-form journalism podcast is one of the most well-produced podcasts out there; it is truly an amazing auditory experience. Co-hosted by Lulu Miller and Latif Nasser, Radiolab dives deep into topics surrounding science, society, ethics, and more. This Peabody Award-Winning podcast inspires, excites, and educates its listeners.
This narrative podcast focuses on the scandals that have rocked the American people to their very core. The host, Lindsay Graham (not the politician) takes listeners on journeys through some of the most outrageous scandals in business, politics, sports, entertainment, and society. Each mini-series uncovers the motivations, actions, and consequences behind some of America’s biggest scandals.
