When You Need A Laugh

We can all agree that this past year has been challenging to say the least. We’ve been sick, we’ve been stuck inside, we’ve been alone, and we’ve been lost. Let’s be honest, at best we are languishing (my new favorite word, thank you Adam Grant) and we could all use a pick-me-up. Sometimes those pick-me-ups come in the form of thirty-minute comedies, so press play on any of these shows when you need a laugh.

If you just finished binging Friends for the seventh time, try Episodes next. Matt LeBlanc stars in this five-season comedy as himself. Yup, you read that right. He plays himself, well a satirical version of himself. LeBlanc is hired to star in a remake of a BAFTA Award-winning British sitcom against the desires of the show’s creators Sean and Beverly. The former Friends star is, well let’s just say, not the right fit for the role and problems emerge all over this Hollywood set.

I was late to the game when it comes to watching New Girl. But after watching I can see why people love this show. After going through a tough breakup, a quirky teacher named Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel, moves in with three single guys she found on the internet...the beginning of all good roommate situations. Friendships, hilarity, and romance ensue as the four friends continue to take on adulthood. Big shout out to Schmidt’s Long Island speech.

"LIRR, NEW YORK, LONG ISLAND, BILLY JOEL ... NASSAU COUNTY ... BILLY JOEL ONE MORE TIME!"

What happens after we die? What if we landed in a utopian heaven-like place where all our wildest dreams come true. Sounds pretty good, right? Well, that’s what Eleanor Shellstrop thinks as well. This four-season comedy created by Michael Schur (you love him from The Office, Parks and Recreation, and Brooklyn Nine-Nine) dives into ethics and philosophy while keeping the audience laughing along the way. Also, Ted Danson dances a few times so that’s sure to put a smile on your face.

If you haven’t watched Schitt’s Creek yet, please just do that right now. This Canadian sitcom was created by father-son duo Eugen and Dan Levy and is sure to make you laugh out loud. The series follows the Rose family once they lose their fortune and end up living in a run-down motel in a random small town. The four Roses - Johnny, Moire, David, and Alexis - try and navigate their new life while learning to live together once again. The show is not only hilarious but also award-winning and record-setting. Schitt’s Creek swept all seven major comedy awards at the 72nd Emmy Awards, the first time a comedy or drama series received all seven awards. Mic drop.

These forever rivals become best friends when life throws them a big curveball. Grace Hanson, played by Jane Fonda, and Frankie Bergstein, played by Lily Tomlin, are complete opposites who form an unlikely friendship after their husbands, Robert, played by Martin Sheen, and Sol, played by Sam Waterston, announce they are in love with each other and plan to get married. The Netflix series follows these dynamic ladies as they navigate their new life. The show also doubles as an Aaron Sorkin casting reunion as Lily Tomlin is reunited with Martin Sheen from The West Wing and Jane Fonda is back with Sam Waterston, her costar from The Newsroom.
